What Is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of malicious software (malware) designed to encrypt or block access to a computer system or specific files and then demand a ransom from the affected users.

Most ransomware attacks begin when a user opens an email containing a malicious attachment or visits a malicious website that downloads the malware onto the computer. Once the ransomware has been installed on the system, it begins encrypting files and making them inaccessible, typically using cryptographic keys.

The user is then presented with a ransom demand, usually in the form of a pop-up window or a text file on the desktop. The ransom note may instruct the user to pay a specific amount in cryptocurrency in order to regain access to the encrypted files.

There are several types of ransomware, including crypto-ransomware, scareware, screen-locking ransomware and mobile ransomware. Each type operates differently and can cause varying degrees of damage.

It is important to note that paying the ransom does not guarantee that the encrypted files will be restored. Paying ransom demands is also discouraged, as it financially supports ransomware operators and may encourage them to carry out further attacks. Instead, users should take preventive measures to protect themselves against ransomware, including regularly backing up important data and using anti-malware software.
